The Procrastinator's Brain
TEENAGER PROBLEMSTT
SERIES - 1
Teens are one of the great procrastinators and we all know that very well! we are really good at leaving all the work for the last minute, right from assignments to homeworks no matter how important that work is, we all get this thought in a corner of mind that "maybe we can do it tomorrow?"
Why I’m excited to talk about it, is because I’m a procrastinator too! and to be honest I procrastinate a lot, but I have been trying to avoid it as much as I can. Okay so what happened with me is that I decided to prepare the script on 4th of November and complete it by 6th for the next episode of the podcast. On 4th I was like “ I have plenty of time with me, I can do it tomorrow and tomorrow I’m gonna kill it!! Bruhhh. On the next day I was like I still have time with me I can do it later on, I have the whole goddamn day I can do it man! So I decided to write the script in the evening and the only word written on the paper was “The". So my final plan was I’ll get up early in the morning when the 'beautiful birds would be chirping near my window and sun would be rising and under the clear blue sky I’ll write my script' but my procrastinating brain stopped me right there and suggested me that “ma’am you can leave this work for the last minute and you can have fun right now, why don’t you go and watch tv or play video games that would be soo much fun!!” and I was like it’s an amazing idea.. So finally on Saturday night I was left with my school assignment, projects and script to complete off but somehow I completed them all with keeping my fucking eyes wide open with caffeine. It wasn’t a pleasant experience of course.
So what procrastination exactly means and why teenagers procrastinate the most, Its not that adults don’t procrastinate, they do but less than compared to us. So procrastination is nothing but putting tasks off until the last minute, well dealing with procrastination is an important part of maturing and moving toward accepting adult responsibilities.
Causes of procrastination in teenagers are simple.
1. We don’t realise exactly how much time a certain task will take and therefore delay it.
2. Distractions around us like social media, video games etc.
3. Lack of motivation to start a task .
As I said that I’m a procrastinator too, I know it’s not easy to get yourself out of that zone because we have become habitual of leaving the work for the last minute to some extent. I know it’s not just me or just my friends who procrastinate but we all have a procrastinating brain in us which always guide us to the easy and fun place. And what happens is that those fun hours turns into dark regression and self hatred, cause in the end you’re still left with your work to complete.
Why procrastination isn’t good for us
1. It can lead to poor academic performance.
2. It promotes negative feeling
3. Self defeating behaviour
4. Can cause mental health issue like anxiety, getting panic attack etc.
I think Non- procrastinators doesn’t exist, all of us are procrastinators. Some people say that they work best under pressure but it’s not the same case with everyone. So now the question arises that what should we do about it? How can we get rid of procrastinating habit? Well according to the old saying “where there is a will, there is a way”.
What you can do about it is that
1. Figure out what motivates you - every person has a different source of motivation with them, well it’s you who have to figure that what motivates you to do your work without delay.
2. Observe carefully when and why you procrastinate - most of the time, what happens is that we procrastinate because something is too easy or monotonous. We get distracted through the elements around us. Lack of motivation is one of the reason too.
3. Set short and attainable goals - Bruce lee said that "Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one” when setting a goal make sure that its timely, relevant, not much time consuming, reachable otherwise you might be tempted to procrastinate. Be patient as you proceed because works at their own pace.
Look getting yourself out of that procrastinating zone is kind of a difficult task to accomplish but it’s definitely not impossible, I’m a procrastinator too but to some extent I’ve started to accomplish the small goals I set everyday for myself. It might seem difficult in the beginning but trust me it will bring so many positive changes in your life, you would start to feel like everything is going soo well in your life. You just gotta give it shot. So keep working hard and don’t let the procrastinator monster ruin everything. You might have seen the angel and a devil giving advice to the person on his shoulders in movies... yeahhh you remember right? so don’t let that devil influence you! Listen to the angel she’s always right!
